Street Performance World Championship 2009

Yes, the street performers are back! After a couple of days of fun down in Cork last weekend, they’re now in Dublin for 4 days of entertainment and voting for the best of the street performances!

The Street Performance World Championship is now in its 4th year running, and it gets bigger and better every year. As usual there are multiple areas/stages around Merrion Square for your viewing pleasure, along with some food stalls to get some snack if you feel the pang of wanting-something-to-munch-on.

The one thing that I thought is a shame to be left out from the festival calendar is the Bravosho. Bravosho was held in previous years to give people a chance to review several street performers in a 2-hours performance session at the Dublin Castle.

Nonetheless, the weekend fun look set to be a great one. The weather forecast isn’t looking too bad either. Just a tad windy perhaps so wrap up well. And I’m giving a word of warning to all the fellas – if you’re watching Bendy Em, be careful not to be called as one of the two volunteers. You may end up freezing with every wind blow, as she’s going to take your shirt away! ;-)

Street Performance World Championship

Here’s an event that everyone should take note of – the extravagant AIB Street Performance World Championship! It runs from Friday 13 June to Sunday 15 June, at Merrion Square, and what’s really nice is – it’s FREE :D

This is the third year that this event is taking place, and it’s gaining much popularity given the fun factors from the different acts. This year, 12 very professional street acts will be competing to be the champion over the three days. Each act has time slot of an hour, either starting on the hour or on the half hour, at the multiple tents/areas set up. On Saturday and Sunday, each act will be performing 3 times per day too!

A little heads up – there are two special Bravosho (over 16s only) at the Dublin Castle, on Friday and Saturday evening, and the doors open at 6pm. During the Bravosho, ALL 12 acts will be performing on one stage, so it’s a one-stop shop for the championship. Again, there will not be any cover charge but seats are limited. Expect some crazy queue and possible turning away if you’re not there sufficiently early.

Of course, in the spirit of street performance, bring some decent amount of change with you to tip the performers. You’re buying a wonderful experience, tipped to the amount that you feel the show deserves and/or what you can afford. The atmosphere will definitely be brilliant (I loved it when I was there two years ago, during the first SPWC) and the performances highly entertaining.

See you there? ;-)
