Unforgettable Elephant Meal

When traveling far from your home Metroblog, it’s nice to know you have automatic friends in some 40+ cities around the world. Accordingly, when a fellow metroblogger and I rolled into Dublin, tired, hungry, and eager for some local flavor, we knew a quick flash of the bat-sign over the MB network would help get us somewhere tasty fast.

We were not disappointed.

Daragh told us the Elephant & Castle in Temple Bar wasn’t to be missed and man, was he right. Given, the mix of cold, wet weather and absolute hunger probably would’ve made kitty litter taste good if properly garnished, the quality of the Elephant & Castle meal we enjoyed went far beyond merely satisfying our hunger.

Never ones to make unnecessary decisions, we opted for two sandwiches between the two of us: the Turkey Curry and a Garlic Burger (to which we added some stilton because you can never have too much cheese, Gromit). The burger was tasty, no doubt. But that turkey sandwich – so simple yet so flavorful. To quote So I Married An Axe Murderer “They put somethin’ in it that makes ya crrrrave it fortnightly!” We dreamt about this sandwich throughout the whole of Ireland and into France. If you google up the place, most sites categorize it as “American” cuisine – it is, a bit, as much as sandwiches and fries are American or any particular country’s fare, but it had a local flair as well (at least, it had flavors I don’t know from home – and therefore, I dub it local).

The prices were a teensy bit higher than you might expect for the type of fare offered, but the service was friendly and prompt, and the atmosphere was chill yet upbeat. Be prepared for a wait – the place seemed hoppin’ when we were there.

So thanks Daragh and the MB Dublin crew – we loved your city and wish we could’ve stayed longer!
